How we match gemstone pairs

A good pair looks like one stone seen twice. We match each pair by colour, tone, size and cut so the two stones sit evenly side by side, then list the total carat weight and the size of each stone. One purple sapphire pair is a deliberately mismatched, tumbled pair and is described that way.

What pairs are used for

Matched pairs are most often set as stud or drop earrings, as side stones next to a centre stone, or in a two-stone (toi et moi) ring. Small 3.5 to 4 mm rounds suit everyday studs; larger ovals and cabochons suit statement earrings.

Vintage 1930s pairs

Our bullet-cut sapphire pairs were hand-cut in Ceylon in the 1930s and never set. See them with our rose cuts in vintage cuts.

Every stone ships the next business day from Toronto, fully tracked and insured, with free shipping in Canada and worldwide. Returns are accepted within 30 days in original condition.

Frequently asked questions

Are the two stones identical?

They are natural stones, so no two are identical, but each pair is matched closely for colour and size. The listing photos show both stones together.

Are your pairs treated?

Sapphires and rubies are standard heat unless the listing says unheated. Glass-filled stones are labelled in the title.

Can you make the earrings?

No. Pairs are sold loose for your own jeweller.
