Buying a loose ruby

Ruby is red corundum, the same mineral as sapphire and 9 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for a ring worn every day. Colour matters most: the most sought-after rubies are a strong, pure red without being too dark.

Mozambique rubies

Mozambique has become one of the most important sources of fine ruby. Our stones are natural and heated only, a standard, stable treatment. We do not sell glass-filled (composite) rubies.

Ruby for signet and engagement rings

Flat-cut ovals sit low in a signet ring; faceted ovals and emerald cuts suit engagement and cocktail rings. Small matched rounds make classic ruby studs. See also matched pairs and ruby stud earrings.

Every stone ships the next business day from Toronto, fully tracked and insured, with free shipping in Canada and worldwide. Returns are accepted within 30 days in original condition.

Frequently asked questions

Are your rubies glass-filled?

No. Our rubies are natural and heat only, with no glass filling.

Is ruby a July birthstone?

Yes. Ruby is the birthstone for July and a traditional 40th anniversary gem.

Can you set the ruby?

The loose rubies on this page are sold loose for your own jeweller. If you'd like us to make the ring, choose a certified Mozambique ruby (about 1.5 ct, 8 × 6 mm) from our ring tray for the Roho Stone Ring, set in 925 sterling silver.
