Looking for something truly rare? These genuine 1930s rose cut Ceylon sapphires have never been set. They're perfect for an engagement ring, a custom pendant, an heirloom project, or a collection. Each is a gemstone that existed before the person wearing it was born.

  • Natural. Antique. Irreplaceable. Made to be remembered.
  • Vintage 1930s rose cut Ceylon blue sapphires in a soft light blue, an Art Deco estate gemstone
  • Individual loose gemstones for ring center stones, pendants or bracelets: 5 vintage loose sapphires to choose from
  • An average size of 7mm in diameter (1.13–1.45 ct)
  • Genuine antiques from the 1930s, never used or set, bought from a 4th generation gemstone dealer in Sri Lanka
  • Sapphires are no longer cut in rose cuts, as a rose cut consumes more rough gemstone material than brilliant cuts. Authentic vintage rose cut stones are not made anymore. What exists is what remains.

Era influence

The rose cut was the main gemstone cut from the 1500s to the early twentieth century. It was the cut of Georgian brooches, Victorian rings, Art Nouveau pendants and Art Deco engagement rings. By the 1940s, the modern brilliant cut had largely replaced it.

The light blue colour

Light blue sapphire is its own category. It's paler and cooler than the darker cornflower and royal blue stones that fill the market, closer to ice blue or steel blue, and it reads as elegant and understated. The soft light of a rose cut suits this gentle tone. It's the colour of vintage French sapphire jewelry and Art Deco platinum rings. If deeper blue sapphires have felt too heavy for your design, these may be exactly right.

Transparency you can trust

This is a natural Ceylon sapphire from the 1930s. It is heat treated, which is standard for this material and era and has been practised for centuries. Nothing has been filled or enhanced beyond that. The light inclusions typical of period cutting are present and visible.

Who these stones are for

Antique and estate-style jewelry designers, collectors of antique gemstones, jewelry makers working on rings, pendants or bracelets, and anyone who wants an engagement ring with a genuine sapphire that can never be found again. Natural sapphire is also the September birthstone.

A gemstone for him: the men's signet ring

At Roho Jewels, we believe men deserve beautiful gemstones too. A natural vintage rose cut sapphire set into a signet ring is a bold, personal alternative to a plain metal signet: one-of-a-kind, full of character, and a ring he'll wear for decades and one day pass down. The stone is sold loose, without the setting.

  • Signet face: at 7 mm, this stone suits a signet face of about 10–13 mm, a classic small signet or pinky ring
  • Setting: flush (gypsy), bezel or half-bezel keeps it low and smooth, with no claws to catch on sleeves or gloves
  • Depth: the flat rose cut sits very low, which makes it ideal for a flush-set signet
  • Metal: rich in yellow gold, sharp in white gold or platinum, rugged in oxidised sterling silver
  • Wear: Mohs 9, second only to diamond, so it is tough enough for a ring worn every day
  • Perfect for: husbands, fathers, grooms, graduates, milestone birthdays, or a signet he buys for himself

Perfect for

Engagement Rings · Custom Pendants · Heirloom Projects · Anniversary Gifts · September Birthdays · Collectors · Jewelry Designers · Men's Signet Rings · Gifts for Him
