Blue sapphire rewards a trained eye. This guide sets out, plainly, how to judge a natural blue sapphire and how we describe ours, so you can compare stones with confidence.
Start with colour
Colour is the first and most important factor. A fine blue sapphire has strong, even colour without grey and without dark zones that turn black indoors.
Two broad styles are popular. Cornflower blue is lighter and brighter. Royal blue is deeper and more saturated. Neither is better; it is a matter of taste.
Always judge a stone in daylight as well as indoor light. We are happy to send a short daylight video of any stone before you decide.
Clarity and cut
Blue sapphire usually shows some natural inclusions. Look for a stone that is clean to the eye face-up. Fine natural silk is normal and, in an unheated stone, can be a reassuring sign.
A good cut returns light across the whole face, with no dull window in the centre. Ovals and cushions are classic choices for rings. Flatter stones sit low, and step cuts and rose cuts give a vintage look.
Heated or unheated?
Most blue sapphires on the market are heated to improve colour and clarity. Heat is a permanent, stable and widely accepted treatment, and it needs no special care.
An unheated sapphire has only been cut and polished. Its colour is exactly as it came out of the ground. Unheated stones are rarer and command a premium, and many Neelam buyers ask for them.
At Roho Jewels, every sapphire has standard heat unless the listing says unheated. We never sell a heated stone as unheated. Our unheated stones are checked in-house, and where no independent lab report is included, the listing says so. If an independent lab finds a treatment we did not disclose, you get a full refund.
Treatments to ask about
Beyond heat, some sapphires are glass-filled or treated in other ways that affect value much more. We label glass-filled stones clearly and price them accordingly. Our gemstone treatment guide explains each label.
Origins: Ceylon, Madagascar and Thailand
Our loose blue sapphires come from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar and Thailand. Each listing names the origin where known.
Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
Ceylon sapphires are known for bright, lively blues. Our current Ceylon stones include AGL (Thailand)-certified heated stones of 1.03 to 1.15 ct, from cornflower to royal blue, and unheated stones: a 4.03 ct oval, a 6.83 ct square cushion in crystal light blue, a 10.01 ct cushion and a 14.59 ct emerald cut in icy blue. Each listing states whether an independent lab report is included. We also offer hand-cut 1930s rose and bullet cut Ceylon sapphires with standard heat.
Madagascar
Madagascar is one of the world's most important sapphire sources, known for rich, saturated blues. Our Madagascar stones include a 1.06 ct square cushion step cut in velvety royal blue and a 1.60 ct shield cut, both with standard heat.
Thailand
Thailand has been a major sapphire source and trading centre for generations, known for deep, saturated blue stones. Our 1.65 ct royal blue oval, about 8 x 6 mm, comes with a GIA Sapphire Origin Report that gives Thailand as its origin and states that it is heated. The GIA report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle.
Origin on a report is the laboratory's expert opinion, and we quote it as such. Origin can add a premium, but only when a lab report supports it.
Reading a lab report
Several of our sapphires carry reports from GIA or AGL, and the listing names the lab. You can see them in our certified gemstones collection. Where a listing names a report, it travels with the stone and we can share a copy before you buy.
On the treatment line, "indications of heating" means the stone has been heated. "No indications of heating" means it is unheated. A report confirms identity and treatment, but it does not grade beauty, so colour in daylight still matters most.
For any stone without a report, we can arrange a GIA, AGL or GRS report on request and tell you the cost and timing first.
Buying from Toronto
Every order ships free from Toronto, Canada, tracked and insured. Higher-value pieces are insured to their declared value and need a signature on delivery. Ready-to-ship stones ship the next business day.
For orders outside Canada, import duties or taxes may apply on delivery and are paid by the buyer. They are set by your country's customs office and are not included in our prices.
Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery. Loose stones come back with any lab report that came with them.
A note on value
We sell sapphires to wear and enjoy, not as investments, and we make no claims about future value. Pay for the colour you see and like, and for clear documentation.
Ask us about any stone
Browse our loose blue sapphires, or read answers to common questions on our FAQ page. If you tell us the colour, size and budget you have in mind, we will send a daylight video of matching stones with weight, measurements and treatment notes.
