Why Mogok matters

Mogok, in Upper Burma, is one of the most historically important gem-mining regions on earth. For centuries, its rubies, sapphires, spinels and moonstones have set the global quality standard for each of those stones. Mogok also produces peridot, and it has a richer, more saturated green than the commercial material from Arizona, Pakistan, China and Egypt, which tends to be light to medium green. Large rough of the quality needed to cut a 28 ct vivid oval is not common in current production.

The scale of 28 carats

Peridot changes with size. At 22.7 × 16.5 mm face-up, light travels through more crystal before it returns, so the green develops a depth and richness that smaller stones can't produce. A peridot of this size almost never appears in retail gemstone channels, from any origin.
