The August birthstone is peridot, the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its lime to olive green comes from iron, so peridot occurs in only one colour family. Spinel and sardonyx are also listed for August.

Peridot is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale: good for pendants and earrings, and for rings with a protective setting. It is the traditional 16th anniversary gem, and fine stones come from Pakistan, Myanmar, Arizona and Sri Lanka.

For August birthstone jewelry we offer the Leo zodiac necklace, a 925 sterling silver constellation coin with natural peridot at its brightest star (the other stars are labelled lab-grown diamonds), and a natural untreated Ceylon peridot of 28.53 ct, a statement stone for your own jeweller to set in a ring or pendant.

Frequently asked questions

What colour is the August birthstone?

Green. Peridot ranges from yellowish lime green to deep olive; a bright, pure green is usually preferred.

Is peridot good for an August birthstone ring?

Yes, with a bezel or protective prongs. It is softer than sapphire, so remove it for heavy work.

Is your peridot natural?

Yes. Our peridot is natural and mined, and the 28.53 ct Ceylon stone is untreated.

Every piece ships free and insured from Toronto, with 30-day returns and exchanges.
