Looking for a sapphire nobody else has? The shield cut isn't made in standard sizes, and you won't find it in a catalogue. Each one is cut from a particular piece of rough to its own outline, so no two are the same. This is 1.60 carats of deep blue natural Madagascar sapphire in a crisp shield shape: a centre stone for a ring, a geometric pendant, or a men's signet that looks like no one else's.
- Natural. Geometric. One of a kind. Made to be remembered.
- Natural Madagascar blue sapphire, 1.60 ct, shield cut
- Deep blue, shifting slightly cooler as the stone tilts
- Geometric fancy shape for a unique engagement ring, pendant or signet
- Heat only, the standard accepted treatment for sapphire
- A loose natural blue sapphire from Madagascar, sold unmounted. There is only one of this stone.
The shield cut
A shield cut is a geometric fancy shape based on a heraldic shield: a straight top edge, sides that taper, and a pointed base. Instead of the even sparkle of a round, its facets throw the blue in sharp, angular flashes. It looks deliberate and architectural, and suits a bezel or a setting that follows the outline closely.
The colour
A rich deep blue from Madagascar, saturated enough to hold its colour in low light without turning inky. The colour shifts gently between pure blue and a cooler tone as the stone moves, a natural effect of the crystal and the faceting.
About the inclusions
This stone has natural inclusions, and some can be seen with the naked eye depending on the light. The photos show it as it is. If you need an eye-clean stone, this isn't the right one, and we'd rather tell you now. If you love natural character, it is a striking, honest sapphire.
Setting it
There are no standard mounts for a shield cut, so it needs a setting made to its outline. A goldsmith can build a bezel or a close-fitting prong setting around 8.1 × 6.6 mm, and the shallow 3.4 mm depth keeps it low on the finger. We're happy to send exact measurements and an outline for your jeweler.
A gemstone for him: the men's signet ring
At Roho Jewels, we believe men deserve beautiful gemstones too. A natural shield cut sapphire set into a signet ring is a bold, personal alternative to a plain metal signet: one-of-a-kind, full of character, and a ring he'll wear for decades and one day pass down.
- Signet face: at 8.1 × 6.6 mm, this stone suits a signet face of about 12–15 mm (most men choose a face of about 15–18 mm), great on the ring or middle finger
- Setting: flush (gypsy), bezel or half-bezel keeps it low and smooth, with no claws to catch on sleeves or gloves
- Depth: the stone is 3.4 mm deep, so ask your jeweler for a signet head at least 4.4 mm deep
- Metal: rich in yellow gold, sharp in white gold or platinum, rugged in oxidised sterling silver
- Wear: Mohs 9, second only to diamond, so it is tough enough for a ring worn every day
- Perfect for: everyday wear, a wedding day, a graduation, a milestone birthday, or simply a signet he chooses for himself
Birthstone meaning
Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the traditional gemstone for 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries, long a symbol of loyalty, wisdom and sincerity.
Perfect for
A centre stone for a ring, a geometric pendant, or a men's signet. And a natural choice if September is your birth month or you're marking a 5th or 45th anniversary.
