Buying a loose emerald
Emerald is a green beryl prized for colour above all. Almost every emerald contains natural inclusions, often called jardin, and most are treated with oil to reduce how visible they are. We state the level of oil on every listing, from minor to no oil, so you know what you are buying.
Colombian and Zambian emeralds
Colombian emeralds are known for a warm, slightly yellowish to pure green. Zambian emeralds tend toward a cooler, bluish green. Both are natural; origin describes where the stone was mined.
Caring for an emerald
Emerald is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale but can be brittle. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners and hard knocks; clean with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Your jeweller can recommend a protective setting.
