Dreaming of a cornflower blue engagement ring? Cornflower blue is the soft, bright, medium blue many people picture when they imagine a sapphire ring: lighter than navy, never washed out. This is a natural Ceylon sapphire in exactly that colour, just over a carat, in an elegant oval step cut. It comes with an independent AGL report, so you and your jeweler know exactly what you're setting. It's your "something blue", and you can wear it every day.

  • Natural. Certified. Cornflower blue. Made to be remembered.
  • Natural Ceylon (Sri Lanka) blue sapphire, 1.03 ct, oval step cut
  • Cornflower blue, medium tone with a velvety look
  • AGL (Thailand) certificate included
  • Standard heat only, the traditional and widely accepted treatment for sapphires
  • A loose natural blue sapphire from Sri Lanka, sold unmounted with its AGL certificate. There is only one of this stone.

What "cornflower blue" means

In the sapphire trade, cornflower blue describes a medium blue, named after the cornflower wildflower. It's brighter than royal or navy blue, and it keeps its colour in both daylight and evening light rather than turning dark.

The oval step cut

Instead of many small sparkling facets, a step cut uses long, parallel facets, so you see calm, mirror-like flashes and the colour pools in the stone. It's refined rather than flashy.

For the engagement ring buyer

  • Just over 1 carat, a classic solitaire size
  • About 6.6 × 5.1 mm, which fits standard 7 × 5 or 6.5 × 5 mm oval settings
  • Beautiful in a solitaire, a diamond halo or a bezel setting
  • Mohs 9 hardness, made for everyday wear
  • AGL certificate for you, your jeweler and your insurer

A gemstone for him: the men's signet ring

At Roho Jewels, we believe men deserve beautiful gemstones too. A natural cornflower blue sapphire set into a signet ring is a bold, personal alternative to a plain metal signet: one-of-a-kind, full of character, and a ring he'll wear for decades and one day pass down.

  • Signet face: at 6.61 × 5.1 mm, this stone suits a signet face of about 10–13 mm, a classic small signet or pinky ring
  • Setting: flush (gypsy), bezel or half-bezel keeps it low and smooth, with no claws to catch on sleeves or gloves
  • Depth: the stone is 3.32 mm deep, so ask your jeweler for a signet head at least 4.3 mm deep
  • Metal: rich in yellow gold, sharp in white gold or platinum, rugged in oxidised sterling silver
  • Wear: Mohs 9, second only to diamond, so it is tough enough for a ring worn every day
  • Perfect for: everyday wear, a wedding day, a graduation, a milestone birthday, or simply a signet he chooses for himself

Why Ceylon

Sri Lanka has produced fine sapphires for more than two thousand years, and Ceylon is one of the most recognised sapphire origins in the world.

Birthstone meaning

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the traditional gemstone for 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries, long a symbol of loyalty, wisdom and sincerity.

Perfect for

A cornflower blue centre stone for your own engagement ring, your "something blue", a pendant, or a men's signet. And a natural choice if September is your birth month or you're marking a 5th or 45th anniversary.
