Looking for something truly rare? Most sapphires on the market are heated, and very few untreated stones reach this size. This is a natural Ceylon sapphire of 14.59 carats that has never been heated or treated in any way, in a bright, icy light blue that glows in daylight. It's an emerald cut with a deep 10 mm pavilion, so the stone holds its colour and has real weight and presence. At 12.2 × 12.0 mm face-up, it's a true centrepiece for a statement ring or pendant. It's also the kind of stone many Neelam buyers search for: natural, untreated, Ceylon origin and well over 10 carats.

  • Natural. Unheated. Icy blue. Made to be remembered.
  • Checked in-house by Roho Jewels; no independent lab report. Comes with our genuine guarantee and the Roho Jewels lifetime guarantee.
  • Natural Ceylon (Sri Lanka) blue sapphire, 14.59 ct, emerald cut
  • Never heated or treated in any way
  • Bright, icy light blue that glows in daylight
  • Deep 10 mm pavilion for real weight and presence
  • A loose natural blue sapphire from Sri Lanka, sold unmounted. There is only one of this stone.

Why unheated

Heating is the standard, accepted treatment for sapphire and is used on most stones sold today. An unheated sapphire shows exactly the colour nature gave it. Large untreated stones like this one are uncommon, because most rough of this size is heated before cutting.

The colour

Sri Lankan sapphire specialists call this shade "icy blue" or "light blue": a light, bright blue rather than the deeper cornflower or royal blue. It's bright and transparent, so light moves through the stone and it glows in daylight. The photos show it in natural sunlight, in hand, so you can see its true colour and size.

The emerald cut

Long, parallel step facets and cut corners give clean, mirror-like flashes, and the deep 10 mm pavilion lets the colour build up inside the stone. It's an elegant, architectural cut that suits a large, transparent stone like this one.

For a statement ring or pendant

  • 14.59 carats and 12 mm across, a bold centrepiece
  • The emerald cut suits a bezel, a cut-corner four-prong or an eight-prong setting
  • At 10 mm deep, it needs a custom or semi-custom setting with a deep enough basket
  • Mohs 9 hardness, made to be worn
  • Platinum or white gold keeps the icy blue crisp, and yellow gold adds warmth

A gemstone for him: the men's signet ring

At Roho Jewels, we believe men deserve beautiful gemstones too. A natural icy light blue sapphire set into a signet ring is a bold, personal alternative to a plain metal signet: one-of-a-kind, full of character, and a ring he'll wear for decades and one day pass down.

  • Signet face: at 12.2 × 12 mm, this stone suits a signet face of about 16–19 mm (most men choose a face of about 15–18 mm), great on the ring or middle finger
  • Setting: flush (gypsy), bezel or half-bezel keeps it low and smooth, with no claws to catch on sleeves or gloves
  • Depth: the stone is 10 mm deep, so ask your jeweler for a signet head at least 11 mm deep
  • Metal: rich in yellow gold, sharp in white gold or platinum, rugged in oxidised sterling silver
  • Wear: Mohs 9, second only to diamond, so it is tough enough for a ring worn every day
  • Perfect for: everyday wear, a wedding day, a graduation, a milestone birthday, or simply a signet he chooses for himself

For Jyotish (Neelam) buyers

In Vedic astrology, blue sapphire (Neelam) is traditionally associated with Shani (Saturn). Many practitioners prefer a stone that is natural, unheated and from Sri Lanka, and this stone is all three, at over 14 carats. Please consult a qualified Jyotish practitioner before wearing.

Certification

This stone is sold without a lab certificate. Our guarantee covers it: if an independent lab finds any treatment, you get a full refund.

Birthstone meaning

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the traditional gemstone for 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries, long a symbol of loyalty, wisdom and sincerity.

Perfect for

A centrepiece for your own statement ring, pendant or Neelam ring, a men's signet, or a designer's one-of-a-kind piece. And a natural choice if September is your birth month or you're marking a 45th anniversary.
